Deciding to have or get involved in ant farms is one thing, but trying to choose which one to suit your needs and environment can often prove difficult. That is why Uncle Milton Industries came up with the great idea of producing a gel ant farm. The gel ant farm provides the ideal solution for a multitude of reasons.

The modern day ant farm has not really changed an awful lot since 1931 when they were first created and known as and given the name formicarium. In 1956 they were taken on board by a company called Uncle Milton Industries and mass produced, and even though they are not an everyday massively sort after product Milton Industries has still managed to sell in excess of 20 million to date.

There are a few variations, but all tend to be based on a clear plastic or glass thin rectangle, being clear allows you to view the ants as they go about their everyday activities building cavities and tunnels, which I have to say is pretty amazing to see.

Seeing ants working together as a team and performing various tasks can be a pretty humbling experience, but addictive viewing none the less.

The sand and soil filled formicarium can be a little difficult to see into in some cases due to its consistency making it dark to see the more inner tunnels, but ok for the ones closer to the sides.

This can lead to the owner often shining a bright light into the formicarium which can upset things a bit as ants in their own environment usually carry out their activities in the dark or dim lighting.

There is also the case of feeding and giving them water and while keeping ants is probably one of the cheapest forms of animal keeping they still require some attention.

There is a solution to this and that is Uncle Milton Industries now produce a range of gel filled ant farms.

The gel ant farm is quite unique in so much as it does not need sand or soil as it is filled with a blue or green gel like formula. Why unique? The formula not only produces great views of the ants as it is clear enough to see through, but is also a food source in itself. The Uncle Milton ant farm has been taken one stage further and they now produce an illuminated gel ant farm which as you can imagine is quite spectacular: Find out more…

I’m sick of all these tiny, plastic colorful pieces of crap trying to pass themselves off as an ant farm. They should really be called ant cages or something, because you can’t actually farm the ants. No one in America is allowed to ship or sale queen ants (they can in Europe tho). Can you believe that? How are you going to farm ants without a queen? They just sit in those cages, with no purpose until they die! I don’t see what the big freaking deal is! I have heard their arguments for why they don’t want them shipped around the country (introduction of a non-native species, etc.), and they do have a point, but ants are not really that hard to get rid of and so their threat should be overlooked and those regulations lifted.

Even if you could buy a queen ant, she would just be wasting her time in such a small enclosed environment. She would produce more ants than the aquarium could tolerate in a few months.

I have always had an interest in ants. They are fascinating creatures. Ever since I can remember I have been making ant farms. I like to just sit there and watch them sometimes, and then setup little obstacles for them to overcome. Occasionally have bug wars!

The ant farms for sale on the market do not even have an open top, or a flat landscape for them to hunt food. You can never really interact with the ants or conduct experiments, because you can’t reach them. Everybody is so scared of a lawsuit that they don’t want the kids even touching the ants. For crying out loud! They are usually Western Harvester Ants. I’ve been bitten several times. It does not hurt that bad. I didn’t even cry the first time I was bit at 5 years old.

The way I make ant farms is the way they should be made, and I hope to get it manufactured someday, but it might not ever happen, so I ask that one of the many toy ant farm distributors in America come out with just one ant farm that is geared toward the serious observer and not just another toy for kids. It doesn’t have to be huge, but it’s gotta be bigger. At least 8″Wx12″Lx10″H.

Here’s how you do it? I like mine a little bigger. You take an 18″ long x 8″wide x 12″ high fish aquarium to be your outside wall. Then you take a 16″long x 6″wide x 9″high fish aquarium to be your inside wall. Remove all of the cheap plastic parts at the top of the smaller aquarium so you can get it clear for glue. Place the large aquarium right side up (the open side up). Place the smaller one upside down (open side down) into the larger one. Glue the smaller one to the bottom of large aquarium, leaving approx. 1″ on each side for dirt. (You can also place a light inside the small aquarium for some cool effects) You may want to glue down four 2″ strips of glass or something smooth surfaced around the top of the Large aquarium to make it harder (nearly impossible) for the ants to escape. Get some decent tunneling dirt and fill up your new ant farm. Leave about an inch of room from the top. Go dig up a queen and some worker ants and get started. If you added a light inside the small one. You will need to drill a hole for the plug. Hi Tech Gifts & Gadgets | Remember Ant Farms when you were a Kid? |

How to get rid of household ants?

Fighting ants is difficult, but possible. The main thing here – take into account some features of ant life. Thus, the heart of the ant colony is a nest where the female, or the ant queen, producing more and more working individuals. Females do not leave the nest and can not get food on their own, they are fed sterile working ants.

Find a nest of ants in the apartment is very difficult. Usually it is securely hidden in some small cavity in the wall or floor. Even if you’re lucky and you find an ant hole, do not hurry to sever or remove tile flooring: hidden from the corridor leading to the nest can be quite long, and you have to ruin not just one tile or parketinu. However, once the working ants feed the entire colony, you can try through them, “treat” of females and larvae of some poisonous potion. This is possible if the concentration of poison (most effectively – boric acid) will be small (not to exceed 2 per cent). The ant does not die immediately, but will carry it to the heart of the colony.

Here are some simple recipes:

1. Dilute to a glass of water about 1 / 4 teaspoon of boric acid, three teaspoons of sugar and one or two teaspoons of honey. The nozzle in a shallow bowl to display more than once or twice, but within a month, and in a place where the ants can get, and other pets – no. Keep the poison for the ants do not become a dangerous toy for your children.

2. Against ants recommended meat bait. For its preparation take 2 tablespoons of minced meat and half teaspoon of powdered borax. All this is mixed and laid out in public places ants.

3. Ants deterred as the smell of oil, leaves, elderberry, wild mint and tarragon.

4. Helps drill – a mixture of boric acid with sugar or honey. These creatures eat it and die.

5. Dichlorvos.

6. It is necessary to bring in an apartment where pets live ants is a perfect forest from the street and those, like respectable revelers should take away the woods and home. By the way, there’s nothing funny, the way has already been tested – the disappearance of household ants – 100%.

7. Type in a jar of water, add more honey or sugar, they will crawl back and voluntarily drown himself.

8. Try garlic grease their way around a couple times a month.

9. Frontline Spray helps radical – very expensive spray, from cockroaches, ants, fleas and ticks. For sale in veterinary pharmacies.

10. Radical means – “Regent”. Small package, worth about 10p. Dilute with water, apply a small syringe with a needle in all holes, slits.

Knowledge of the laws of life ant colony can not only find the appropriate way to fight, but also eliminates unnecessary fears. Thus, even if the return of the guests, along with a piece of my grandmother’s cake, you bring a few fruitless job muravishek, they still will not be able to establish a colony and begin to multiply. Resettlement is responsible for only females. If it were not so, the ants would take much less time to settle on the world.

There are a multitude of different manufactured formicarium types, styles and designs, and on top of that are the kits and plans so you can produce your own using simple materials. Designed to enclose and house an ant colony within in a similar fashion to a fish tank or reptile vivarium a formicarium provides the ideal ant farm observatory.

The idea behind their design is to make them thin and long so that once the ants are added you will be able to view and observe the ants activities including looking side on into their burrows and tunnels which they will build before your very eyes.

Normally transparent from thin glass or a hardened plastic and elongated in shape the first types of formicarium where created back in 1929 and were decorated with palace and farm scenes to add additional visual interest. In 1956 they started to be manufactured by a company called Uncle Milton Industries and called the Uncle Milton ant farm. Since then they have gone on to sell well over 20 million varieties of ant farm to the general public.

There are a multitude of individual websites with formicarium interests that go into detail explaining how to produce your own using general items and household products, but there are a few base line rules that should be adhered to in every instance.

Housing: When choosing the main housing product be sure to make sure it is not too thin, you will be surprised as to what ants can actually chew through.

Security: One key factor is that ants are great escapologists and it is better to have several hurdles for them to overcome rather than just risking one.

Open Ant Farm: Some people like to have an open plan ant farm with the formicarium in the middle and such things as tree stumps or similar around it so that the ants can be fed from these and viewed returning items back to the nest. Anything that is placed should be attached securely so as not to fall over while you are out and allow the ants to enter your home across the stumps.

Having ants in your home in any fashion is paramount to having a colony of miniature ferocious wild animals on the loose in containment, nothing will bring this home more than if you provide your colony with a live food source such as a fly. Ants are just as happy to eat cat food, grapes, meat, honey, and pretty much anything you wish to give to them.

A modern formicarium such as the Uncle Milton ant farm offers a great means of observing these highly overlooked fascinating social creatures. A great means of relieving stress is by having a formicarium on the desk at work or educating the family on the sideboard at home, but wherever you decide to place your ant farm it will very soon become compulsive and addictive viewing for all.

Why not discover the Uncle Milton ant farm experience for yourself and see an amazing array of ant colony environments to keep and study ants in.

It’s been years since the red imported fire ant first made an appearance, and the situation is still not entirely under control. Now a new species has arrived. They are known as `crazy raspberry ants’ and they are concentrated in 8 counties in and around Houston. The ants have been in Texas since 2002, but their growth has exploded in the past year, with three more counties added to the list of those already infested.

The ants are called “crazy” because they scurry about in a seemingly random pattern, and they’re called `raspberry’ not for their appearance, but for Tom Raspberry, the pest controller who first discovered them six years ago.

Unlike the much-reviled fire ant, the crazy raspberry ants don’t sting and their bite is relatively inoffensive. But this doesn’t mean these ants don’t cause problems. What they lack in bite, they make up for in sheer numbers. When crazy raspberry ants infest a property, they tend do so in spectacular fashion. An infestation can number in the billions of ants, and once an infestation is established, property owners find them extremely difficult to control.

Usually the size of an ant colony is held in check by other colonies of the same species–all of them competing for the same resources. If an ant from one colony encounters an ant from another, they will start a fight, often to the death. Colonies may also mount massive raids against one another. No so with the Raspberry ants. Different colonies of raspberry ants are not hostile to each other, but instead treat one another as if they were nest mates. This means that Raspberry ants throughout Texas are just on big happy family, creating what is in effect a single, enormous, statewide “super colony.” Without checks from other members of their species and without any natural predators, the Raspberry ants can achieve an almost total environmental control.

When the ants enter homes or industrial sites, they’re often drawn to the warm buzz of electrical equipment. Their diminutive size, about 3 mm, means that when teeming masses of them crawl across a circuit board, they can fall between the spaces of electrical elements, closing the loop and shorting out connections. They have damaged pumping stations, fire alarms, and personal computers. They’ve even made an unsuccessful play for NASA’s Johnson space center.

It’s clear that the crazy raspberry ants are having an impact on the environment. They kill many other insects, including fire ants and snakes, which has earned them some friends. However, they have also been reported to overwhelm newly hatched birds and small mammals.

Still, much more research needs to be done to determine the lasting environmental consequences of their explosion. One of the basic problems of invasive species is that other species in the regions have not evolved to deal with them. So they can severely affect the numbers of resident species that live in the area. Still the ants seem to have fallen into a regulatory hole.

So what’s being done to control these ants? Bryan Black from the Texas Department of Agriculture says that these ants can be controlled using Termidor, a pesticide used to control termites. Recently, at the request of Tom Raspberry, the TDA has expanded labeling of this product to allow pest controllers to use it in significantly larger quantities when combating raspberry ants.

How to get rid of Ants in your home???
There are over 12000 species of ants in the world, they build colonies just like humans and are in a constant battle for space.
Here are a few facts about Ants
1.Ants have been living on the Earth for more than 100 million years and can be found almost anywhere on the planet.
2.Ants build many different types of homes. Many ants build simple little mounds out of dirt or sand. Other ants use small sticks mixed with dirt and sand to make a stronger mound that offers protection from rain.
3.Ants Build Cities large ant hills contain complex ventilation systems that remove carbon dioxide and bring in fresh air
4.Ants are social insects, which means they live in large colonies or groups. Some colonies consist of millions of ants. There are three types of ants in each species, the queen, the sterile female workers, and males.
5.Ants are the only animal besides humans which wage war in organized batallions, against other organized opponents.
6.Ants do not have lungs. Oxygen enters through tiny holes all over the body and Carbon Dioxide leaves through the same holes.
They are made up of 3 main parts. The head, the trunk(middle section), and the rear or metasoma. All six legs are attached to the trunk. The head consists of the jaws, eyes, and antennae.
So when they invade our property they can cause havoc,as they will use our food supply as their own.
How to we get rid of them???
I added a few methods which work in my own experience.
1.Ant powder or talcum powder/baby powder. This method is the one which in my experience works the best. Because the ant breaths through holes in its body the powder clogs the holes and eventually kills the ant,the ant also takes the powder back to its colony and affects other ants with the same process.Add powder to floors and next to walls leave for a week and it will get rid of your ant problem. Please be aware that ant powders can be poisonous so be very careful using this near young children and pets.
2. Another home remedy to kill ants is to mix boric acid and sugar together into a paste, about one tablespoon of boric acid to a cup of sugar.Drop the paste near where you saw the ants, they will eat the poisonous paste take it back to the nest and infect the queen hence wiping out the colony.
3.Black pepper is a nonlethal, poison free, cheap, and safe way to get rid of ants – sprinkle the black pepper where you see them congregating and watch them run. Follow them to where they’re exiting – which is the same spot they’re entering in at – and sprinkle the pepper at that spot to keep them from coming back in. It’s safe to use in your cabinets, on windowsills, near your pets and kids, around food.
4.The main reason why Ants return to your home is because of a food source, make sure you remove crumbs, food, sugar and other sweet edible foods like cereals from your units, and wipe down so everything is clean.
thank you for reading my post please leave a comment.

We have all experienced the nasty little buggers. Ants can be a major pain, and even a life threatening situation to certain people that have an allergic reaction to ant bites, and because of this, ants have been known as killer ants. It simply does not seem probable of such a tiny little thing as an ant, but their best defense seems to be their huge numbers. They tend to multiply swiftly, easily, and immediately. They can actually dominate a yard in the event that they are left to themselves. A little youngster who by accident falls into a fire ant bed and becomes immediately covered in them will be in agony and pain, and in some cases may even need to be rushed to an emergency room. A dying animal can easily be overtaken by them and utilized as a food source, quite the disturbing thought.

Ants consume a large range of things. They’re not nearly as fussy as many of us humans when it comes to their dinner choices. They don’t even require silverware! They can carry large volumes of food in comparison to their body sizes.

It’s human nature to immediately grab a can of ant spray or a bag of granules and commence walking the yard to search for their colonies. If you have resided in places like Texas and Louisiana, you realize that ant beds can become massive. The fire ants are hostile and dangerous. It’s much better to control an infestation than to wake up one day and realize that your residence now belongs more to the ants than to you.

Occasionally pesky insects may become immune to the chemical compounds sold on the market. Ant bait and ant poisons can lose their usefulness due to overuse and many years of battling the very same poisons over and over again. The chemicals may furthermore bring about harm to various other insects and animals. In case you don’t store them appropriately, your children may become poisoned by them as well.

Though it’s true that many natural insecticides could be harmful as well, they are less hazardous regarding our environment and less dangerous overall than chemical poisons, particularly if you understand precisely how to use, mix, and also store them properly.

Natural or organic insecticides are those which come from natural resources. Boric acid, which is actually a form of the mineral boron, is actually applied on ant beds. At times it is blended with other things such as sugar and boiling water. It can also be mixed as borax soap with sugar and water and is safe to work with around pets and small children. Several people spread it along the entry points in their residences, apartments or campers.

One more natural insecticide to utilize for controlling ants is cayenne pepper, made into a liquid and applied as a spray, it is quite effective. Some people actually grow their own pepper plants just for this intent. Hot peppers are also utilized to control or kill other insects. Absolutely make sure you do not let your small toddler have accessibility to your pepper plants. Hot peppers can cause painful blisters when eaten.

Corn meal can also be used as ant control. It is a low-cost alternate to poisonous chemicals. If perhaps you grow your own corn, you may well even know precisely how to create your own corn meal to feed the ants population with. It is a food the ants totally like to consume, but the key to getting rid of the pesky ant is when they try and digest the corn meal, they are unable to. They get a bad case of indigestion and dye.

There are quite a few alternatives for natural insecticides that can benefit your pocket book, your plants, and your surroundings. It is a way to deal with insects that could help everybody all the way around.

Ant Farms or formicarium as they are known have been around since 1929 and range from the very basic form of formicarium right up to the vivarium or aquarium style that contain entire colonies of ants. One of the longest running producers is the Uncle Milton Ant Farm range. Often referred to as ant farm Milton they have been providing families, schools, and offices with decades of fun from their great range, but is the Uncle Milton ant farm the best there is?

Let us look at some facts, Uncle Milton Industries has been producing their ant farm range since 1956 and in that time have managed to sell over 20 million of these fascinating window boxes that allow you a front seat into an otherwise hidden world of nature.

For anyone that is not sure how an ant farm actually works, it is quite simple really. I will not go into the various styles or types right here, but the basic formula is if you visualise a fish tank that has had the ends reduced in width by about 90%, this gives you a very narrow elongated fish tank that is now called a formicarium.

The formicarium has to be thin so that when the ants burrow and dig tunnels they can be seen from the side this is done by adding a special sand or soil. When the ants are finally added there is a normal gestation period of two to three days in which the ant farm is covered with a black towel so as to allow the ants to settle and start producing their initial tunnels.

Once the towel is removed the formicarium containing the ants is ready to start being observed.

Most modern day ant formicarium tend to be made of a hardened plastic rather than glass. There are several types of ant farm which are: Giant, Illuminated, Gel, and Kit Form, all of which are available from Uncle Milton Industries.

So we have established that the Uncle Milton ant farm range has been bought by more people than any other manufacturer and they have a pretty much untarnished reputation as producers of quality goods for the public, they have certainly done extensive research in order to create some pretty amazing products, ant farms included so ant farm Milton or Uncle Milton ant farm certainly seems to stand head and shoulders above any others, which should give you confidence when buying their products.

Ant Farms were the best experience decades ago due to the lack of readily available entertainment, but now thanks to great modern ant farm builders such as Uncle Milton the formicarium is once again the ideal home companion and education system. Read on and discover what is making the Uncle Milton ant farm so desirable.

Uncle Milton Industries has provided us with more than 20 million of these windows into nature since 1956. That alone is a pretty impressive statistic for a product that is not highly promoted or advertised in the main stream such as some others like some of these PC games that we see advertised all the time. So what is it that makes watching hundreds of little creatures go about their daily business?

One of the greatest weights mankind has to carry in this modern day is all the daily ups and downs that he/she is faced with which build up and eventually end up producing stress. One of the great therapies for reducing stress is to immerse ourselves into forms of relaxation. That is where ant farms come into their own right.

Once you start to watch the activities unfolding before your eyes in a formicarium the days stresses and strains fade as your interest grows.

Ants are highly fascinating creatures and their activities will never cease to amaze you as they dig tunnels, build bridges, and create mountains right before your very eyes.

The new styles of formicarium mean there is no-where that is not suitable. There are small, medium, and large ant farms to suit all situations. They come as illuminated, gel style, sand and Uncle Milton Industries even produces a giant ant farm that will satisfy any curiosity.

Imagine having an ant farm in your office, not only would you been keener to get in each day to see what your insect friends have been up to overnight, but the daily events make every working hour a constant hour of interest, far better than Newton’s balls or any other desk gadget or stress reducer.

Then there is the home, keeps the children quite for hours and days as well as being a great educational tool. Even schools are in favour of ant farms as a form of demonstrating what goes on beneath the earth that we are not normally fortunate enough to get a close up view of.

As with anything worthwhile you can only gain a glimpse of the overall picture from an article or blog, but one thing that should not be overlooked when reviewing ant farms is the fact that they are probably the cheapest animal activity to maintain once a formicarium (ant farm) has been purchased.

Ants are more than happy to eat what you do not and that pretty much includes everything, but they are amazing to watch when live prey enters their domain, and of course have a sweet tooth just like most of us and are partial to the occasional sweet.

The Uncle Milton ant farm is probably the best choice when it comes to value for money as well as the comprehensive information and advice that comes with every one of their ant farms. There are of course also several different breeds of ant that are ideal for a formicarium, they are normally best suited due to their sturdiness to different environments and challenges that they face. Any of these provide great viewing and activities that we can immerse ourselves in.

Ever wondered what goes on in the depths of an ant colony deep in the ground? I can tell you it is pretty amazing, extraordinary and compulsive viewing. Using an ant farm or formicarium for the study of ant colonies is not only exciting, but highly educational as well. One of the most popular makes comes in the form of an Uncle Milton ant farm; formed back in 1956 Uncle Milton’s ant farm or Milton Industries has sold over 20 million household formicarium.

Ants are certainly not insignificant as you would find out, they are without doubt one of the most resourceful social creatures I have ever seen with a dedication to the overall teamwork expression the likes of which I have never witnessed before, there is certainly no I in an ants world.

One of the things I find extraordinary about them is that they herd and use aphids in pretty much the same way as we use cattle, sadly you will not get to see this in a formicarium (ant farm). They round the aphids up and huddle what they can on a plants stem, such as a rose bush. The aphids are then free to graze on the sap of the plant when hungry, the ants will also protect them from predators and in extreme cases even take the aphid into the colony.

In return for this caring nature the ants are able to excrete a substance known as honeydew (which they are very partial to) from the aphids back by stroking it with their antenna. Incredible behaviour I am sure you would agree, but how did the first ants ever work all this out and then manage to continually pass it down or even from species to species.

I tell you this only to demonstrate that there is so much more to the ant kingdom than most of us would probably realise.

Fascinating would be an understatement, but as you sit at your desk looking at your computer take a second to think what a great addition to your desktop or sideboard an active ant-world would make, knowing that every time you looked up or over that something else would be evolving or unfolding before your eyes.

They certainly get to be the center of attention in a conversation when you have friends round and nine times out of ten someone that has seen an active ant farm will have one themselves within a few weeks, and why not they are hardly a high price item or cost a fortune for their upkeep, quite the opposite in fact.

One of the best providers is Uncle Milton’s ant farm, which also produce an amazing array of ant colony environments for keeping ants in. Build ant farm kits that allow you to make your own formicarium tend to be less favourable as they do require a little more initial input even though they may be slightly more cost effective.
